A destination wedding may make you think of sun-drenched beaches and warm sand between your toes. But here’s something about Greece that not everyone knows… it’s also beautiful in winter.
Here at Olive Hearts, we’re all about weddings that fill the senses. So imagine the scene... you and your partner are making your vows to one another in crisp mountain air. There may be a dusting of snow. The clouds may be hanging low in the valleys, creating a magical, fairytale backdrop to your wedding.
Then in a cosy stone taverna, looking out over the mountains and lakes, you smell cedarwood and cinnamon. You feel the warmth of log fires as tiny lights and candles twinkle and your guests relax happily, enjoying delicious local food and wine. Perhaps there will be a toast (one of many!) with tsipouro – the artisanal spirit made alongside wine in many of our mountain regions.
If cosy, authentic, beautiful winter settings and lovely, traditional hospitality is your vibe, there really couldn’t be anywhere better than our mountains and lakes for a Greek winter wedding.
And for an outdoors couple, a winter wedding in Greece can be combined with a honeymoon of hiking, skiing, mountain biking, pony trekking, paragliding and more. (Because yes, we have ski resorts here too!)
Here are just some of the places we could take you…
Zagorohoria
The Zagori are a cluster of 46 traditional villages nestled in the Pindus mountain range in the northwest of Greece. Think unspoiled natural beauty, stone-built houses, arched stone bridges and bags and bags of charm. They blend history, culture, and outdoor adventure in a setting of breathtaking beauty. They’re close to ski centres, mountain trails and more – with alpine lakes like Drakolimni close by.
Pilio
Pilio is a stunning mountainous peninsula in Thessaly in northern Greece, which offers a unique blend of lush nature, picturesque villages, skiing, hiking and beautiful beaches. We Greeks know the area around Mount Pelion as the mythical home of the Centaurs – half-human, half-horse creatures from ancient mythology (and also from Harry Potter, if you’re a fan!). It’s also a traditional agricultural area – which means the freshest, most delicious food is a given. And if you’re looking to treat your guests to a tour of this area’s beauty, you could have them arrive by the Pelion Railway – a charming, historic narrow-gauge train.
Metsovo
Metsovo is a popular winter destination here in Greece that’s known for its snow-covered landscapes, cosy cabins, and tranquil atmosphere. It’s in the Pindos mountain range, overlooking a steep valley – which makes for dramatic wedding photos. This is where the sound of mountain springs accompanies dramatic vistas of lakes, rivers, ancient bridges and mountains. Imagine cosy wooden cabins, red-tiled roofs, quiet forest walks – and your heart filled with wonder. Absolute postcard perfection!
Lake Plastira
This stunning destination combines natural beauty, outdoor activities and a tranquil atmosphere. Nestled at a height of 800m in the Agrafa mountain range, it’s surrounded by dense forests and picturesque, snow-capped mountain peaks. Quite simply, it’s a photographer’s dream. The villages of Neohori and Neraida in particular offer spectacular views of Plastira.
Pertouli
Pertouli is a charming mountain village located in the Meteora region of central Greece. Nestled in the foothills of the Pindus mountain range, Pertouli is known for its lush natural surroundings, traditional architecture, and the otherworldly Meteora rock formations. It’s a peaceful retreat for your special day – and it’s steeped in authentic Greek culture. In the winter, it’s transformed into a ski centre which provides a cosy alternative to larger resorts.
Ioannina area
The city of Ioannina lies at 500m above sea level on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis, truly shines in winter months. Located in the northwest part of the country, within the Epirus region, Ioannina is known for its rich history, natural beauty, and the breathtaking Pindus mountain range. In winter, the region transforms into a serene wonderland, offering a blend of outdoor activities, historical exploration, cosy village retreats, impressive castles, lakes, mountains, national parks and ski resorts.
If you’re planning a Christmas wedding, Greece could be everything you hope for – filling your senses and creating lifelong memories for everyone who experiences your special day.
And for now, we wish you Kala Christougenna and Kali Chronia! – Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year!
With many kisses,
Helena and Sophie
