Are same-sex weddings legal in Greece?

You and your partner are ready to make a commitment to one another for the rest of your lives. How magical and wonderful! And we are so proud that Greece has become the first majority Christian Orthodox country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage.

Which means the resounding answer to this question is that, yes, gay weddings are legal in Greece. And here at Olive Hearts, it’s our privilege to organise one of the most important days of your life.

What do same-sex weddings in Greece look like?

It’s your special day, and you can have it look or feel any way you want.

We think marriage between two people who love each other should always have been possible – and Elena and I are lifelong supporters of marriage equality.

But one of the up sides of LGBTQ+ weddings being a more recent phenomenon is that you can create your own traditions and celebrate in any way that’s meaningful to you. So talk to us about your dreams and what’s important to you – and we’ll work with you to make it happen.

Who officiates at gay weddings in Greece?

If you want your official wedding to happen in Greece, this will take place in a town hall – and we can certainly arrange this for you.

However, many of our clients opt to have their official wedding in their home country, and then come out to Greece for a “symbolic” wedding. This is to make the legal paperwork easier to manage.

If you go for the first option, the person who carries out your wedding will be a town hall official. If you choose the second option, the world is your oyster! We could match you with a celebrant. You could have close friends marry you. Or we could conduct the ceremony for you (we’d be honoured).

Is Greece a gay-friendly country?

Yes, absolutely it is. We’re a modern European country with liberal views. Civil partnership has been legal and recognised here since 2015 – and gay marriage became legal in early 2024.

It’s also important to us that our suppliers share our world view. So your venue, your caterers, your florists… everyone, in fact, will be thrilled to be involved with your wedding.
